“The Fate of the Furious” offers no surprises. It’s formula, which is what the fanbase wants from the franchise. As long as cars zoom, humans fly, Gibson remains spectacularly unfunny, skirts reach mid-buttock, tuneless rap blares on the soundtrack, and Diesel makes constipated faces, then all is well in this world. Bless the faithful and their purchasing power, but there’s always hope with every new installment that the producers might trust the wonders of editing, casting, and practical effects. We came close with 2011’s “Fast Five,” but in the midst of all the numbing mayhem, such a success now feels like a fluke.
