The Protagonist (John David Washington) is a CIA agent who barely survives a Ukrainian opera house assignment, encountering a mysterious artifact before he consumes a cyanide pill to protect the mission. Waking up soon after, The Protagonist joins Tenet, a secret organization currently focused on the whereabouts of Russian oligarch Sator (Kenneth Branagh), a dangerous man with mysterious ties to the future.
The Protagonist is introduced to the ways of inversion, giving those with the technology the power to manipulate time, creating violence impossible to predict. Looking for Sator, The Protagonist finds his way to Kat (Elizabeth Debicki), the villain’s estranged wife and a woman trying to escape from his control, fearing for her son’s safety. Joined by partner Neil (Robert Pattinson), The Protagonist endeavors to infiltrate Sator’s inner world, coming into contact with the intricacies of inversion, with the antagonist working toward a master plan to destroy the planet.
Nolan prefers wide spaces, and he delivers a compelling opener inside the opera house, where The Protagonist is caught up in a secret mission, exposed to a metal artifact he doesn’t recognize, and he receives help from a masked protector who quickly disappears. There’s a room full of extras, shootouts, and a large explosion, setting up the scale of “Tenet” before there’s even a story.
